Who Qualifies for the True Potential Scholarship?

WHAT:   The True Potential Scholarship seeks to create opportunities for young people pursuing their True Potential through education. True Potential will grant at least fifteen, 1 year full tuition scholarships to deserving students.

WHO:   The True Potential Scholarship has been created to help young immigrants continue their education.  Specifically, the True Potential scholarship targets young immigrants that have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), sometimes referred to as “Dreamers” or the “Dream Act” as well as to students with Temporary Proctected Status (TPS), as well as those immigrants with Special Juvenile Visas.

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant should meet the following criteria:

1)      Have been awarded DACA, TPS or Special Juvenile Visas;

2)      Attend or enroll in classes at a community college in Nebraska.

WHEN:   The scholarships will be awarded for the 2021-2022 academic year.

WHERE:   True Potential is creating partnerships with community colleges in Nebraska.

WHY:   TPS and in particular DACA are tremendous blessing for many young immigrants. DACA allowed thousands of young immigrants who were brought to the United States as minors to live and work legally in the United States. Despite the many advantages to having DACA as an immigration status, one major disadvantage is that DACA and TPS recipients cannot accept any federal or state money in any context. As such, DACA and TPS recipients cannot receive federal financial aid or many scholarships that are partially funded with public money. The True Potential Scholarship seeks to fill that gap by awarding scholarships that are 100% privately funded and targeted to those who need private scholarship funds.

True Potential has decided to partner with community colleges because True Potential believes community colleges offer tremendous value. Community Colleges offer a wide variety of opportunities ranging from technical certificates to classes required to graduate with a four year university degree in any field. All of these opportunities come at a fraction of the cost of public and private universities and allow True Potential to make the biggest impact with every dollar awarded. The founder of True Potential Scholarship, Ross Pesek, is a proud community college graduate, attorney, and recipient of the Nebraska Bar Association Outstanding Young Lawyer of 2013.

Community college can be the starting point for realizing any dream!
